Retrofit: A second life for products 2018 December
The planet where we live is being filled with plastic, metal waste that takes a long time to be eliminated.
Being very simplistic, the ways to avoid this waste would be to use natural materials or reduce current production.
The earth has physical limits of size and with the world population on the rise, it is complicated to continue with the current and future requirements of the people, if the existing resources are not taken advantage of new technologies.
And reduce production would bring factory closures, layoffs.
The circular economy wants to solve these issues. It is being applied in the production and consumption of energy.
But it can also be adapted in the manufacture of products, repairing broken products, upgrading obsolete components, improving them, taking advantage of «hard» parts of materials that have a long lifespan. It is what we would call «retrofit», give a second life for products.
To retrofit, you need to study the product, its relationship with others, analyze the reason for its breakage, manufacture the component to be replaced and then install and run it.
The retrofit is a checkmate to programmed obsolescence (limiting the useful life of a product that could continue to operate with enough guarantees), to the interests of the manufacturers in increasing production at all costs and to the economic theories of scale economy that speak to reduce the cost of a product or a service by increasing its production.
Although it may not seem like it, there are currently many products that have this philosophy.
They are called in many ways, pieces of exchange, reconstructed, recycled, …
Some of the best known are clutches, turbochargers like those of the KBB company, car radiators.
LED lighting systems, restoring historic lampposts as Simon Lighting does.
In machinery, replacing old motors with electric motors, in packaging environments like the Bossar company, in additive metal fabrication with Renishaw.
Manufacturers of diesel engines that see that they either modify them to reduce polluting emissions, or they will have to eliminate them. Volkswagen and Audi are already working on it. Also the possibility of adapting diesel engines to gas.
And the interiors of the trains and the trains themselves, as Talgo is doing.
Comment that additive manufacturing is accelerating the retrofit process, producing parts quickly, economically, eliminating stocks and revolutionizing the world of spare parts.
Innovation is not only to invent and create, it is also to improve.
